garlic mustard

A European species that is highly invasive here, being equally proficient at spreading in the woods as in the fields. Pretty in the winter, though. And the new shoots are mighty tasty in early spring. (Eat your enemies, I always say.)

Dave Bonta: Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. One mystery with all of this, though, is why many plants that have been present for over a century suddenly took off in the last couple decades and became a real scourge. Some people blaim acid deposition and other forms of air pollution, which can change soil chemistry to favor some of these plants. But it's becoming increasingly clear that the spread of invasive earthworms is a big part of the problem, too. (Sorry -- that's probably a bit more than you wanted to know, isn't it?)

Earthworms, like the poor, are always with us so it's good to know about them.

Ha! Yes, I thought it was a bug of some sort at first. Nice capture.

You must be having fun with this site.
Dave Bonta: You bet - it's a terrific outlet. I've learned a lot just from the challenge of making photos BIG. There's only so much one can do within the confines of a 425px-wide blog column (or even a more standard 500px-wide one).
