Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), whose shadows we see here, is an evergreen shrub in the heath family, and is common in the ridgetop forests of the Appalachians.

It's nice to see someone else post pictures with snow! I love how you captured the shadow in the snow...very creative!
Dave Bonta: Thanks. snow makes a terrific backdrop from subjects and screen for shadows, and also sometimes an interesting subject in tis own right (I liked the ripples here). Unfortunately, we don't get as much snow as we used to here, and sunny days in the winter are rare, so in conditions like this I rush around snapping photos like a madman.
