I wonder if the artist anticipated the rust and the other discoloration. The discoloration makes it look like sky, and the rust suggests the trails left by jets.
Dave Bonta: I'm sure he must've in general; Richard Serra's influence looms large. Whether he anticipated specific weathering patterns I guess would depend on how early in his career this was made.
This is an unique sculpture, love the way the brid shapes are 'see-through-wholes' love you other blog too.
Dave Bonta: Thannks, Astrid. Yeah, I like the way he's kept some of the cut-outs, as if they were just in the process of taking wing. That, and the weathering, is what saves this work from being kitschy to me. It also helped that there were pigeons and meadowlarks flying around in the field behind it when I visited.
This is an excellent idea for a sculpture and a very nice capture of it. Rusting, stationary birds!
Dave Bonta: Thanks. Someone at my other blog compared the peeks of green to a stained glass window. I'm glad I took a page out of your book and went for fairly bright colors here.
