The hive looks like it could be the remains of some sort of futuristic monitoring device, with an eye not unlike that of the HAL9000.

Dave Bonta: That's an interesting take. Hive insects might well represent a higher evolutionary step, I sometimes think. The trouble is they're only marginally interested in us, unlike Big Brother and the obliging space aliens of our dark fantasies.
