mountain laurel
A photo from last year at this time. This was taken on the powerline right-of-way near my house, which is a scrubland habitat, but I'll put it in the "forest" category. Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), whose shadows we see here, is an evergreen shrub in the heath family, and is common in the ridgetop forests of the Appalachians.
