Wow. Nice find.

I can't tell if the tree was burnt, and thus the bark (is it bark?) is white from post-fire damage combined with chill...or if the bark was set upon by fungii and thus transformed.
Dave Bonta: Nope, no fire -- just fungi and monera. That's only a hundred yards from my parents' house, but I'm sure you know how easy it is to overlook cool stuff in one's own backyard.
